My least favorite thing about reading a great book is finishing the last page and closing it. I always feel like I am leaving a piece of myself behind. I miss the characters a little bit, as I was so immersed in their lives for a period of time.
So, when an author writes more than one book about the same characters I always enjoy getting back into their lives! That was the case with The Haven. It feels like I finished The Keeper just a few months ago, although it was a bit longer. I loved picking up the story of the Lapp family and getting right back into their simple, Amish, farm life in The Haven by Suzanne Woods Fisher.
This story picks up after Julia has married and moved away, and her younger sister, Sadie, has gone to stay with her for a while. After her stay, Sadie returns to Windmill Farm to her family unannounced. While they are surprised by her unexpected return, they are more surprised by the baby she brings home.
The mystery of who the baby belongs too is only one of the questions Sadie must figure out. Another is how she feels about the young man staying at her farm, while watching over a pair of falcons who have made their home there too. Another issue Sadie is working through is forgiving Gid, her suitor, for assuming the worst about Sadie and the baby.
I love this family. They are so “perfect.” By perfect I do not mean without issues, or proper. I mean, real, open, honest, and loving. Each person in this family has their personality, and how they all relate is almost therapeutic for me. They talk things out, they love each other without question, and they stand up for one another unhesitatingly.
One of my favorite characters is Fern, the housekeeper who loves each member of the family as if they were her own. Fern has kind of stepped in to take the place of Maggie Lapp, the mother of Sadie and her siblings, who died years ago. I love how frank Fern is with everyone, she always says what she means, but her love is clear in how she cares for each of them.
You do not have to read The Keeper to keep up with this charming story, but it will offer some depth to the story. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a book that will inspire you. Suzanne Woods Fisher continues to highlight the wonderful life of the Amish, the quiet life, the simple days and the precious love they have for one another.
