Book Review : Firefly Island

I have never read a book told in the past tense, so from page one this book caught me off guard.  Lisa Wingate’s novel Firefly Island will grab your interest through her charming characters, but it will hold your interest as you learn about the mystery surrounding Firefly Island.

The main characters are Mallory and Daniel who meet on capitol hill and quickly fall into a whirlwind romance before getting married and moving to Texas all within a span of several weeks.  Did I mention the other star of the book, who you cannot help be fall in love with, Nick, Daniel’s three year old son.  Mallory tells the story, as she looks back on what happened when she met Daniel and they moved away.

As this new family treks across the country to a small town and an unknown job, they have to get to know each other, and define their new normal.  My favorite part of this story was the Texas scenery, the descriptions of not only life in a small town, but life on a beautiful lake as well.  I loved watching Mallory learn to be a mom, and was delighted by Nick.

This is a great story.  The way Lisa Wingate chose to tell it was a great change from the typical novels I have read.  I enjoyed getting a glimpse of the end early on, but not really understanding the whole picture until the very end.

There is a mix of politics, suspense, country living, romance, and lots of great characters all mixed into this novel and I highly recommend this great book to readers who fancy such stories.

About Firefly Island:

Sometimes love takes you on an adventure completely off the map.

Mallory Hale's life quickly veers off course when she falls hopelessly in love. After a whirlwind romance, Mallory finds herself leaving the bustle and action of Capitol Hill for the remote town of Moses Lake, Texas-with husband, stepson, and a U-Haul in tow.

A sweet, mishap-filled journey into marriage, motherhood, and ranch living ensues, and Mallory is filled with both the wonderment of love and the insecurities of change. But what she can't shake is the unease she feels around her husband's new boss, Jack West. Jack's presence-and his mysterious past-set her on edge, and when hints of a scandal emerge, Mallory finds herself seeking answers . . . and comes to realize that the middle-of-nowhere home she wasn't sure she wanted is the very place she'll risk everything to save.
