I am so excited to introduce you to a “new” author, at least to me and this blog. Nancy Mehl has written an Mennonite novel called Unbreakable. This particular story is book two in her series Road to Kingdom. While I have not read the first in this series I enjoyed meeting the characters of Kingdom.
This is a story about an Mennonite woman, Hope, who is engaged to Ebbie Miller. Hope lives with her father and helps to run the town quilt store, which she loves. The story begins when Hope is on her way back to Kingdom, from a trip to the city, when she is run off the road in her horse drawn buggie and almost killed. Another young man from Kingdom, Jonathan, helps protect her and get her home safely.
The conflict in the story is two-fold.
First, the people of Kingdom are terrorized by someone who is not only chasing them off the road, but also burning buildings. While this peaceful group of people must figure out how they are Biblically allowed to protect themselves, there is a divide between those who want to defend with guns and others who are vehemently opposed to any show of force. I loved how different individuals worked through for themselves, just what they felt was right.
The next conflict is between Hope and her feelings for both Ebbie and Jonathan. Even though she is engaged to Ebbie, she is feeling something for Jonathan and he is expressing his feelings for her. In a short amount of time Ebbie breaks the engagement in order to give Hope the choice. While both men love Hope, it really comes down to which one has the character she wants to be married to.
I enjoyed the suspense in this story, the internal conflicts the characters faced whether romantically or morally. I would love to read the first book in this series, and hope I can read the next one too! I recommend this story to readers who enjoy a quick paced story, a bit of romance, and some great characters to get wrapped up in!

About Unbreakable:
Gentle and unassuming, Hope Kauffman has never been one to question the traditions of her Mennonite upbringing. She quietly helps her father run Kingdom Quilts and has agreed to the betrothal he arranged for her with the devout but shy Ebbie Miller.
Despite the attempts of Hope and other Kingdom residents to maintain the status quo, changes have already begun to stir in the small Mennonite town. The handsome and charismatic Jonathon Wiese is the leader of the move to reform, while Ebbie insists Kingdom must remain true to its foundation. When Hope's safety is threatened by a mysterious outsider, she can't help but question what she's always been taught about the Mennonite tradition of nonviolence.
As it swiftly becomes apparent the threat Hope faced is only the beginning, the town that's always stood so strong finds itself divided. With tensions high and their lives endangered by an unknown enemy, will Hope and the people of Kingdom allow fear and division to break them or will they draw on the strength of the God they serve?
